There are many different colors and qualities of moonstone. When selecting a piece of jewelry, it is important to know your preferences as well as the
range of values or prices that such a piece of moonstone is expected to have.
Moonstone is a natural, semiprecious gemstone that displays unique optical properties, like a wave of liquid color that moves through the stone. It is most often cut en cabochon, and usually with a high dome.
Rainbow Moonstone, as the name suggests, shows all the colors of the rainbow: blue, yellow and orange- pink are the most common.
Blue Moonstone will show flashes of blue when moved in the light. The exact shade of blue varies with each stone: the most valuable blue moonstones have a rich deep royal blue that permeates the whole stone.
Pink Moonstone is becoming popular lately. These gems do not usually show the range of color of the above two: more often it is a shimmer of white that moves across the gemstone. Caution should be used, however, because many large pink moonstone cabochons with good play of color are actually rainbow moonstones that have been affixed onto a pink backing. Many sellers are honest about this manipulation, but there are also those that may try to deceive, or more likely, are ignorant of the treatment themselves.
You know you are safe from a moonstone being treated with backing if you buy your moonstone ring (or any jewelry) with the back of the cabochon open and exposed, instead of sealed in silver.
